Early production “Spoke-Back” sofa by Børge Mogensen. This example manufactured in 1963, the first year of production, by Fritz Hansen, Copenhagen. Beautifully patinated beechwood and leather straps allowing the side to be lowered. Original cushions in “Savak” wool. Marked and dated by maker. The Spoke-Back Sofa is a classic Børge Mogensen design, first presented in 1945 at the Cabinetmakers Guild Exhibition as a proposal for the ‘furniture type of the future’. The sofa was not put into production until 1963. The sofa combines chaise lounge and conversation sofa in one piece of furniture that is practical and expressive at the same time. The light construction in solid beechwood with removable cushions means that the sofa can always be renewed as needed. Børge Mogensen (1914-1972) was one of the most influential designers shaping Modern Danish design and Fredericia’s founding designer. He found inspiration worldwide in his quest to create everyday objects that would endure for generations, believing that furniture should create a sense of tranquillity and a modest appearance. He was acclaimed for his masterful sense of materials and proportions, creating designs celebrated and showcased in leading design museums worldwide.
