Part of the permanent collection of the Palais Galliera – The City of Paris Fashion Museum (see pictures 2 & 3), this 1964 Spring-Summer haute couture skirt suit is currently on display at their “Gabrielle Chanel. Fashion Manifesto” exhibition (see pictures 4, 5 & 6). You can also admire this beautiful couture skirt suit in a podcast illustrating the legendary “Tailleur Chanel” on their Instagram TV (IGTV). It is therefore an iconic and historical piece that Julia’s Dressing is pleased to offer here. Perfect balance between refinement, simplicity, comfort and timeless elegance, the Chanel suit usually consists of three elements : the jacket, the blouse and the skirt. The skirt having now disappeared, remains the jacket and the blouse. Tailored from off-white and navy blue wool tweed, the jacket is fully lined with the same “Surah” silk as the sleeveless blouse. Have a look at the luxury of the finishes : the striped pattern of the fabric connects perfectly at the intersections. The lines on the blouse extend to the inside of the jacket (see picture 10). Numbered 024136 and featuring two front pocket, each sleeve of the jacket has two buttonholes embellished with metal buttons representing lion heads – astrological sign of Gabrielle Chanel. The traditional Chanel gilt metal chain is sewn at the hem of the jacket. Cut from refined Surah silk, the printed sleeveless top fastens with three metal buttons snap fastener and seven hidden buttons down the back (see pictures 12 & 13). GoodWear consistent with age and use. Unlike the jacket which is in excellent condition, the top has some imperfections: four of the 7 pearl buttons are missing (see pix 13), some minor pulled thread, three little spots (see pix 14 & 15) and slight light yellowing under the right armpit.
