Chair no. 14 was made in 1859 in a small family business in Germany to fulfill an order from Anna Daum who dreamed of practical, elegant and space-saving chairs for her café. Orders followed very quickly and Michael Thonet, who was the designer, decided to produce it in series.
In 1930, it had already sold more than 50 million copies source: vitra design museum, weil am rhein.
Chair No. 14 therefore became Thonet’s first industrial model. Its foolproof design, its ergonomics and its quality-price ratio will make it successful in the years that follow. A century and a half, five generations of Thonet later, the “bistro chair”, today called no. 14, is still listed in the company’s catalog and has become a true icon of design history.”
